Which trees are protected in McKinney
- Quality trees with a trunk 6 to 41 inches across. "Quality" means the species is on the City's Quality Tree List.
- Every tree with a trunk 42 inches across or more, whatever the species.
Trunk size is measured at "breast height", 4.5 feet above the ground. Arborists call this the DBH, short for diameter at breast height.
Measure your tree's trunk
Wrap a tape measure around the trunk 4.5 feet up. Enter that distance around, in inches, and this works out the diameter the City uses.
Enter a measurement to see the trunk diameter.
What happens when a protected tree is removed
Removing a protected tree with an approved tree permit or tree preservation plan comes with mitigation. That means planting replacement trees on the property or paying into the City's reforestation fund. The City offers a calculator for estimates, but the Urban Forester makes the final determination.
How to apply for a tree permit
- Measure the trunk and identify the species. A tree crew or a certified arborist can help.
- Mark the tree and its trunk diameter on a plot plan or an aerial photo of your lot. The City's checklist lists exactly what this exhibit has to show.
- Submit the tree permit online through the City's Citizen Self Service (CSS) portal.
Dead, dangerous and storm-damaged trees
If a tree is an immediate danger, call the City's Development Services and explain the situation before it's cut. Take dated photos of the damage first. They help with both the City and your insurer.
Check your HOA as well
HOA rules are separate from the City's. In Stonebridge Ranch, for example, many outdoor projects need an approved Modification Application before work starts. The committee meets twice a month, the rules allow it up to 30 days to review, and it aims to decide within 14 business days. Some villages there have stricter rules of their own. If you live in any other HOA community, check its rules too.
